The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is barely a toddler in the U.S. market and Benz is already introducing a new variant of the beautiful but ferocious super-car. A battery/electric version of SLS is now upon us in the AMG fleet.

We have gotten a glimpse of the first prototype, which is a head turning yellow color, called AMG Lumilectric Mango. The SLS E-Cell is propelled by a group of four electric motors with the pairs at each axle which are integrated with reduction gears to drive all four wheels. Sounds complicated…but we like it!

The SLS E-Cell tops out at 12,000 RPM’s and is stocked with 526 horsepower and 649 pounds of torque. It can accomplish the 0-60 mph sprint in 4 seconds flat.

The SLS AMG E-Cell is also fitted with new LED front lights which are in the shape of a half moon. They bring a new look to the SLS, separating the E-Cell from the normal gasoline engine gull-wing.

The E-Cell is equipped with lithium-polymer batteries, which are split between the center tunnel and a box which is mounted behind the cockpit. The batteries provide a combined output of 480 kilowatts. The batteries will never overheat due to the fact that the SLS AMG E-Cell has 2 separate cooling circuits that manage the temperature of the battery packs at all times. The system can heat or cool the units as needed, depending on the outdoor temperature.

The E-Cell was designed with a new front splitter that works in unison with the reshaped rear diffuser to increase down force.

Interior-wise, the electric-powered SLS is suited with a crisp 10-inch touch screen, which is located in the full carbon fiber center stack/console. Suede lines the sides of the steering wheel, the gauges are more futuristic, and the seats have a one of a kind design. This car is truly a masterpiece!

According to speculation the production models will go on sale in early 2013.

Price: TBD
